LARGEST GATHERING OF CENTENARIANS
At 101 years old — soon to be 102 on 21 February, Valmai continues to charm everyone around her with her wit, honesty and wonderfully preserved memories. Recently recognised at the My Guardian Centenarians’ Lunch, she reflects on a life shaped by family, sport, seaside days at Bondi and a spirit that remains bright after more than a century.
Growing up in Bondi, Valmai attended the local high school and shares amusing stories from her childhood. One that stands out is her mother’s firm reminder that children were to be “seen and not heard,” especially when guests were coming for tea, a rule many in her generation remember well.
Her first job was at Seaman’s in York Street, where she worked as a shorthand and typing clerk, though she admits she mostly did typing. Those early working years shaped the confidence and independence she carried into adulthood.
One of her most endearing stories is the way she approached marriage. With a gentle laugh, she recalls that she “went away and asked Priest Harris” to marry her husband, a simple, heartfelt moment she remembers fondly.
Valmai loved staying active. She enjoyed golf and swimming, often spending time at Bondi Beach. She remembers being responsible for taking her younger brother along, describing him playfully as “a pest,” a comment that still brings a smile.
When asked what she is proud of, she doesn’t hesitate. She fondly recalls winning tennis and cricket matches, always quick to acknowledge she won “with the help of my friends.” It’s a reflection of her modesty and her appreciation for the people who shared those moments with her.
As she approaches her 102nd birthday, Valmai remains a joyful example of resilience, humour and gratitude. It is a privilege to share her story and celebrate an extraordinary century filled with love, laughter and unforgettable moments.
On 23 October 2025, 150 Centenarians joined My Guardian Centenarians Lunch at NSW Parliament House. The gathering earned a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest gathering of centenarians and celebrated more than fifteen thousand combined years of lived experience.
The celebration also aligned with the national transition to the Support at Home program which will help older Australians access personalised care and greater independence. It highlighted the continuing importance of Home Care Packages for those who wish to live safely and comfortably in their own homes.
Valmai’s story reflects the importance of meaningful care understanding and companionship as people age. Many older Australians benefit from Home Care Packages or the new Support at Home program which offer personalised support to help them continue living well. Some residents also receive additional help from organisations such as My Guardian a trusted aged care and disability provider that helps older Australians maintain independence with tailored in home care.
These supports together with family love and community connection ensure that remarkable people like Valmai continue enjoying the memories and moments that matter most.
