Depending on your care needs, you may require residential aged care on a permanent basis, or for just a short period of time as the need arises, such as your home carers being unavailable or for restorative care, to get you back on your own feet. My Guardian Home welcomes both permanent residents as well as those who need our care services for a short period of time. Respite care is limited to 63 days of each financial year, however the possibility of extending this time in lots of 21 days can be arranged. Fees and charges for respite residents differ to those for permanent residents.
A measure of your care needs is needed to assess your eligibility for entry into an aged care home. This assessment is conducted by your local ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team), in which the outcome will determine your level of care and the type of care services suited to your needs. Before calculating the costs of entering a permanent residential aged care, you must first complete the necessary means assessments, undertaken by the Department of Human Services (DHS). Please find links to the forms we may ask you to fill out below, or click here for more information. It is essential that you arrange to complete these forms as soon as possible, as this process can take some time.
• If you do not receive a means tested payment from Centrelink or DVA, complete the Calculation of your cost of care form (SA457).
• If you receive a means tested payment from Centrelink or DVA, and own or part own your home, complete the Property details for Centrelink and DVA customers form (SA485).
What is ACAT?
Before moving into residential aged care, the level of care you need must be assessed. This assessment is conducted by your local ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team), usually by a nurse, social worker, or other health care professional. The assessment outcome will formally outline, in writing, the care services you are eligible to receive. The ACAT assessment is free of charge and can be conducted in the comfort of your own home, or at an ACAT office. It may take several weeks to book an assessment and receive the outcome, so it is recommended that you give yourself enough time to do so. To complete your ACAT assessment, visit
myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422.
Making an informed choice when it comes to aged care can be complex. We can help simplify the process. The amount a resident must pay for their accommodation is determined by their means assessment by the Department of Human Services (DHS). The result of this assessment will indicate whether the resident will pay:
a) No accommodation costs – for some Australians, the Government will pay all accommodation costs
b) An ‘accommodation contribution’ – if the resident must pay for part of their accommodation, the
Government will pay the rest
c) An ‘accommodation payment’ – if the resident must pay for the full cost of their accommodation, they will
need to negotiate a room price with My Guardian Home.
The DHS will advise which accommodation payment option applies to you. If you are required to pay either a contribution or payment (a or c), you can either pay for your accommodation by:
1) a lump sum, called a ‘Refundable Accommodation Deposit’ (RAD) or a Refundable Accommodation Contribution’ (RAC)
2) rental-style payments, called a ‘Daily Accommodation Payment’ (DAP) or a ‘Daily Accommodation Contribution’ (DAC)
3) a combination of both lump sum and rental-style payments, RAD + DAP or RAC + DAC.
Residential respite residents do not pay any accommodation costs or means tested care fees but will be expected to pay the basic daily fee.
The Basic Daily Fee is set at 85% of the Age Pension. This fee is paid by all residents, including those on respite care.
