LARGEST GATHERING OF CENTENARIANS

Enid Rayment - 100 years

At 100 years of age, Enid Rayment continues to share her memories with clarity, warmth and the gentle humour of someone who has seen more than a century of change. Recently recognised at the My Guardian Centenarians Lunch, Enid reflects on a childhood lived between rivers and sea baths, a working life shaped by wartime demands and a family life that brought her the greatest joy.

Enid was born in Cambewarra, a lovely spot just south of Sydney in the Shoalhaven. She describes it as a peaceful place where her mother raised four children with care, resourcefulness and love. One of her fondest memories is of her mother making Johnny cakes, a scone mixture fried in dripping and served warm with golden syrup.

Growing up not far from Sans Souci Baths, Enid often walked down there from the age of eight and spent what she calls half her childhood swimming. Those seaside days became some of her happiest and most enduring memories.

Enid’s first job was in a factory making ladies clothes. She remembers the shift in atmosphere and expectations when the war broke out and the factory quickly transitioned to making army uniforms. It was a time of long days, strict routines and shared purpose, and one that left a deep impression on her.

When asked what advice she would give younger people today, Enid shares thoughtful words shaped by experience. She says to go into things very carefully and not to be headstrong or bullheaded. Her message is one of patience, awareness and taking time to consider choices fully.

Sport was one of her hobbies throughout her life. She says she was not anything special at it but she enjoyed it all the same. What stands out most when she looks back is the birth of her first child, which she describes as one of the proudest and most meaningful moments of her life. She reflects with gratitude on having lived a very fulfilling life.

On 23 October 2025, Enid joined fellow Australians aged 100 and over at the My Guardian Centenarians Lunch at NSW Parliament House. The gathering was officially recognised by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ for the largest assembly of centenarians and celebrated more than fifteen thousand combined years of lived experience.

Enid Rayment’s journey is filled with resilience, good humour and gratitude. It is an honour to share her story and recognise the extraordinary one hundred and nine years she continues to look back on with pride and warmth.
