Phyllis Timms - 101 years

At 101 years old, Phyllis continues to inspire with her warmth, clarity and beautifully lived life. Recently honoured at the My Guardian Centenarians’ Lunch, she reflects on a journey shaped by resilience, family and the simple joys that have carried her through a remarkable century. At just 17, she began her working life as a switchboard telephonist in Sydney, connecting people one call at a time. She remembers those days fondly, especially sharing them with her best friend, Sheila Heming.

Some of her happiest memories come from her time in Blackheath, living in a cosy home where her family even raised a little lamb. She loved swimming, staying active, and embracing the simple joys of life.

But what she is most proud of today are her children and grandchildren, who she says “have done well.” When asked what advice she would give to younger Australians, her message is heartfelt and timeless:

“Finish as much of your schooling as possible.”

Phyllis’s journey is a beautiful reminder of the wisdom, strength and grace carried by every older Australian. We are grateful to share her story and celebrate the extraordinary life she continues to lead.

On 23 October 2025, Phyllis joined remarkable Australians aged 100 and over at the My Guardian Centenarians Lunch at NSW Parliament House. The gathering earned a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest gathering of centenarians and celebrated more than fifteen thousand combined years of lived experience.

The celebration also aligned with the national transition to the Support at Home program which will help older Australians access personalised care and greater independence. It highlighted the continuing importance of Home Care Packages for those who wish to live safely and comfortably in their own homes.

Phyllis’s story reflects the importance of meaningful care understanding and companionship as people age. Many older Australians benefit from Home Care Packages or the new Support at Home program which offer personalised support to help them continue living well. Some residents also receive additional help from organisations such as My Guardian a trusted aged care and disability provider that helps older Australians maintain independence with tailored in home care.

These supports together with family love and community connection ensure that remarkable people like Phyllis continue enjoying the memories and moments that matter most.
