SECRET #12
Balance improves only when it is used
Popular opinion suggests balance naturally declines and there’s nothing we can do.
That is simply not true.
Balance improves when used regularly. Like strength, balance is trainable.
The problem is that we often reduce movement when we feel less steady. That creates a cycle. Less movement becomes less balance confidence which leads to less movement. And so on…
The fix
Simple balance practice can reverse that pattern.
Try these “Controlled or Functional Turning” exercises
- Turning in Place (180-Degree Turn). Stand with a chair in front and a wall behind for support. Turn 180 degrees, stop, and hold for 10 seconds to manage dizziness.
- Balance Turning Drills. Stand between two steps. Step up onto one, then down and turn to step up onto the other, focusing on controlled weight transfer.
- 3.Heel-to-Toe Walking. Walk in a straight line with one foot directly in front of the other, maintaining a steady, slow pace.
You’ll find plenty more simple exercise suggestions online.
Balance is not preserved by protecting it.
