SECRET #20
Good support builds confidence, not dependence
One of the biggest misconceptions about support is that it creates dependence.
That only happens when support replaces capability.
The right support actually builds confidence.
When the right help is in place our clients feel safer moving around; everyday tasks feel more manageable and routines feel more achievable.
Without support, people often become withdrawn; they start avoiding certain tasks, reducing activity and limiting movement.
The fix
Support should not take over.
It should enable.
Our support is tailored to what a person can do, stepping in only where necessary. This approach builds confidence and reduces the dependency that leads to feelings of helplessness.
We encourage small wins to reinforce a sense of control and self-worth.
Good support builds confidence, not dependence. This approach ensures that care services focus on maximising a client’s independence, autonomy, and dignity, rather than simply performing tasks for them.
