In-Home Aged Care Services: Support That Lets You Stay Independent
When it comes to getting older, most of us want the same thing: to keep living safely, comfortably, and independently in our own homes. Thankfully, with the right in-home aged care services, that’s not only possible, it’s more supported than ever.
At My Guardian, we understand that no two people are the same. That’s why our support is tailored to your needs, preferences, and goals, helping you live well, your way.
Let’s explore what in-home aged care actually means, the support available, and how to access it, including through government funding.
What Are In-Home Aged Care Services?
In-home aged care services, also known as home care or support at home, are designed to support older Australians who want to continue living at home but need a bit of extra help. This might mean help with cooking and cleaning, personal care, medication, transport, or even more complex nursing care.
It’s all about making everyday life easier, safer, and more enjoyable while helping you maintain your routines, your preferences, and your independence.
Whether you’re receiving a Home Care Package (HCP) or simply want private home care services, in-home aged care is tailored to meet your needs.
What Is a Care Plan in Aged Care?
A care plan is a personalised document that outlines the types of support you need, how and when they’ll be delivered, and your personal goals.
At My Guardian, we work closely with you and your family to create a care plan that’s realistic, respectful, and aligned with your preferences. Your care plan may include:
- Daily routines and support needs
- Preferred schedule and frequency of visits
- Cultural or language preferences
- Health needs and risk management
- Long-term goals (e.g. staying mobile, reducing isolation)
Your plan isn’t set in stone. It’s reviewed regularly to make sure your support continues to match your needs as they evolve.

Social Support
One-on-one companionship, group activities, or culturally appropriate programs to reduce loneliness and promote community connection.
Respite Care

Government Funding for In-Home Aged Care Services
The Australian Government offers a few ways to help older people pay for care at home:
Home Care Packages (HCP)
There are 4 levels of HCPs based on how much care you need, ranging from basic support to high-level daily assistance. Funds are paid directly to your chosen home care provider, like My Guardian, and we coordinate your services based on your budget and needs.
Private Home Care
If you’re waiting for government funding or want additional support, you can also pay privately for services with flexible options tailored to your situation.
Am I Eligible?
To access government-subsidised home care services, you generally need to:
- Be aged 65 or over (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)
- Need some help to live independently at home
- Be assessed by the government’s My Aged Care system
You’ll need to complete an ACAT assessment (Aged Care Assessment Team) for HCPs.
Don’t worry, we’re here to help guide you through this process and answer all your questions.
