Common Mistakes to Avoid When Managing Your NDIS Funds

We know that navigating your NDIS plan can sometimes feel like learning a whole new language. With so many options, budgets, and responsibilities, it’s easy to feel unsure, especially when it comes to managing your NDIS funds.

At My Guardian, we’ve walked alongside thousands of families through their NDIS journey, and we’ve seen firsthand how simple slip-ups can make a big difference in the care you receive.

So let’s take a look at the most common mistakes and how to avoid them so you can feel more confident, stay on top of your funding, and get the most out of your disability care services.

1. Not Understanding What Each Budget Can Be Used For

Your NDIS funding is divided into different categories like Core Supports, Capacity Building, and Capital Supports. One of the biggest mistakes people make is using funds from the wrong category, which can result in declined claims or even a funding shortfall.

Tip: Always check your plan to see what’s “flexible” vs. “stated” funding. Not sure what’s what? We’re here to help you make sense of it in plain English.

2. Letting Funds Go Unused

It’s more common than you think. Many participants don’t realise their plan is underutilised until it’s too late. This can happen when supports aren’t booked regularly, or when there’s no clear plan for how to use the funding across the year.

Tip: Create a month-by-month plan with your support coordinator or plan manager so you know how and when funds will be used. Regular reviews help you stay on track and make sure you’re getting the help you need.

3. Not Keeping Receipts or Records

If you’re self-managing your NDIS funds, keeping proper records is essential. Not keeping receipts, invoices, or service agreements can cause issues when it’s time to justify expenses and could even impact future funding approvals.

Tip: Use digital folders or apps to store invoices and receipts. If you’re not confident doing this, consider working with a registered NDIS provider like My Guardian, who can help you manage it all with transparency and care.

4. Choosing Providers That Aren’t NDIS-Registered

Some services, especially for plan-managed or agency-managed participants, must be delivered by NDIS-registered providers. Booking with a non-registered provider could mean the cost won’t be covered.

Tip: Always double-check the provider’s status on the NDIS provider register. Or, save yourself the stress by choosing My Guardian, a fully registered disability care service provider.

5. Not Asking for Help Early

The NDIS can be complex, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Too often, participants delay asking for help, and that delay can lead to missed services, lost opportunities, or even a drop in well-being.

Tip: Whether you need a support coordinator, help with SIL/SDA housing, or someone to explain how home care services work with your plan, reach out. At My Guardian, we speak over 80 languages and have over 600 care staff ready to support you and your family.
