LARGEST GATHERING OF CENTENARIANS

Lorna McCain - 102 years

There is a lightheartedness in the way Lorna McCain talks about her life. At 102 years of age, she shares her memories with laughter, honesty and a deep appreciation for the simple moments that shaped her. Recently celebrated at the My Guardian Centenarians Lunch, Lorna reflects on a childhood spent by the water, a life filled with travel and the pride she holds for the family she built.

Lorna was born in Beline and remembers a very happy childhood. She grew up playing on Darling Street Wharf in the water and the park nearby. She attended Nicholson Street Public School and remembers these early years with great fondness.

Her first job was making leather briefcases in Clarence Street. She did not stay long because she did not like it and laughs gently when she recalls leaving. She remembers how the war came and took the boys away, a sobering memory from her youth.

When asked what guidance she would offer the younger generation, Lorna shares a message based on balance and wisdom. She says to work hard, play hard and do not spend all your money on alcohol. It is advice delivered with a smile but rooted in life experience.

Lorna describes her life as always joyful. She has travelled widely and speaks proudly of the many holidays she has enjoyed. One of her favourite experiences was a Sydney to Sydney cruise around the world taken with her eldest daughter, a journey filled with unforgettable moments.

Lorna is most proud of her children and grandchildren. She describes them as all nice and says none of them would have gone off the rails. Her pride and love for her family shine through every word.

Lorna McCain’s story is filled with travel happiness and a deep love for family. We are honoured to share her remarkable one hundred and two years and the joyful outlook she continues to carry.

On 23 October 2025, Lorna joined remarkable Australians aged 100 and over at the My Guardian Centenarians Lunch at NSW Parliament House. The gathering earned a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest gathering of centenarians and celebrated more than fifteen thousand combined years of lived experience.

The celebration also aligned with the national transition to the Support at Home program which will help older Australians access personalised care and greater independence. It highlighted the continuing importance of Home Care Packages for those who wish to live safely and comfortably in their own homes.

Lorna’s story reflects the importance of meaningful care understanding and companionship as people age. Many older Australians benefit from Home Care Packages or the new Support at Home program which offer personalised support to help them continue living well. Some residents also receive additional help from organisations such as My Guardian a trusted aged care and disability provider that helps older Australians maintain independence with tailored in home care.

These supports together with family love and community connection ensure that remarkable people like Lorna continue enjoying the memories and moments that matter most.

In the spirit of Australia Day, we acknowledge the people whose lives quietly shaped our country. Her journey reminds us that Australia’s identity is built not only through milestones, but through lived experience, love and resilience across generations.
