LARGEST GATHERING OF CENTENARIANS

Philip Arthur Hodgson - 105 years

A Life Measured in Moments, Not Milestones

Phillip still remembers his first pay.

It was 11 shillings and 11 pence. That night, he and a friend went to the pictures and bought a hot pie. More than a century later, it is still a moment that stays with him. Not because of the money, but because of what it meant.

Now 105 years old, Phillip reflects on a life that began in the Australian countryside, where childhood was simple, resourceful and full of freedom. Shoes were not always part of daily life, and like many children of his time, he made do with what was available, even fashioning footwear from old motorbike tyres. It was a different world, but to him, it was simply life.

Work began early. At 14, he started as an apprentice mechanic in a local garage. His days were spent pumping petrol and inflating tyres, learning the value of effort and responsibility from a young age. There was no rush for status or recognition, just a steady rhythm of work and life.

Some of his earliest memories also include learning to drive, guided by his father on quiet country roads. With little traffic to worry about, he was behind the wheel as young as 11 or 12. It was a small moment of trust, but one that stayed with him.

Phillip married during the war, a time marked by uncertainty, yet also by connection. He remembers his honeymoon in Melbourne, where he was stationed, a brief but meaningful pause during a significant chapter of his life.

Service became an important part of his journey. As a life member of the Bushfire Brigade, he contributed to his community with quiet commitment. He never saw himself as particularly athletic, even joking about his attempts at tennis, but he lived an active and engaged life in his own way.

When asked to reflect on his life, Phillip does not overcomplicate it. He simply says he has had a great life.

It is a statement that carries the weight of over a century of experiences, relationships and memories built not on grand milestones, but on moments that mattered.

Stories like Phillip’s remind us that ageing is not just about time, but about how that time is lived. For many older Australians, staying connected to familiar routines, communities and surroundings is essential to maintaining that sense of continuity.

Support such as Home Care Packages and the Support at Home program helps make this possible, allowing individuals to remain in their own homes while receiving the care they need.

With the right support, independence does not have to be lost with age.

Organisations like My Guardian provide personalised in home care, companionship and practical assistance, helping people like Phillip continue living comfortably while staying connected to the moments and routines that define their lives.

Phillip’s story is a reminder that a meaningful life is often built quietly, through simple choices, shared moments and a steady appreciation for the everyday.
