LARGEST GATHERING OF CENTENARIANS
“Be happy. Work hard.” That is the advice Sau Kan Sze offers.
At 102 years old, she does not feel the need to say much more. Her life has been shaped by simplicity, consistency and a quiet understanding of what truly matters.
She began working at a young age in a garment factory. Like many of her generation, work was simply part of life. There was no focus on career paths or long term plans, only the understanding that effort and responsibility were necessary.
Her days today are filled with small, familiar routines. She enjoys knitting and spends time watching television, especially Hong Kong dramas. These moments may seem simple, but they bring comfort, rhythm and a sense of ease.
When asked what has brought her the most happiness, her answer is immediate. Her family. A happy family, she says, is everything.
There is no complexity in how she reflects on life. No long explanations, no layered philosophies. Just a steady belief that happiness comes from doing your best and appreciating what you have.
Her story is a reminder that a meaningful life does not need to be defined by extraordinary events. Often, it is the simple things, repeated over time, that create a sense of fulfilment.
For many older Australians, staying connected to familiar surroundings and daily routines is essential to wellbeing. Being able to remain at home, surrounded by what is known and comfortable, brings both stability and peace of mind.
Support such as Home Care Packages and the Support at Home program helps make this possible, allowing individuals to continue living independently while receiving the care they need.
Organisations like My Guardian provide personalised in home care, companionship and day to day support, helping people maintain their independence while staying connected to what matters most.
For Sau Kan Sze, life has never been complicated, and perhaps that is exactly why it has been so meaningful.
Stories of everyday Australians, moments of pride, and the values that continue to shape our nation.
