LARGEST GATHERING OF CENTENARIANS
It simply continued, in different forms, throughout life.
Now 107 years old, he reflects on a journey shaped by knowledge, discipline and a deep sense of purpose. In his early years, he travelled to France to study medicine, a decision that required both courage and commitment at a time when such opportunities were rare. He later returned to China, where he worked as a doctor, dedicating his skills to helping others.
Medicine was not just a profession. It was something he genuinely loved. He speaks with quiet pride about his work and the years he spent caring for patients. One of his most meaningful achievements was being recognised for his medical qualifications, a moment that represented not only success, but years of effort and perseverance.
What stands out most about Yu Shu is not only what he achieved, but how he continues to live. Even now, he remains engaged with the world. He uses a computer to read, learn and stay informed, maintaining a sense of curiosity that has never faded.
When asked what advice he would give, his response is thoughtful but simple. Enjoy life, work hard and take care of your health. It is a message that reflects a balanced view of life, shaped by both experience and reflection.
His story is one of continuity. Of learning, working and growing, not in stages, but as an ongoing process.
For many older Australians, maintaining that sense of mental engagement and independence is just as important as physical wellbeing. Being able to continue learning, staying connected and living with purpose can shape quality of life in meaningful ways.
Support such as Home Care Packages and the Support at Home program helps make this possible, allowing individuals to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving the care they need.
Organisations like My Guardian provide personalised in home care, companionship and daily support, helping individuals maintain both independence and engagement with the world around them.
Yu Shu Shi’s life is a reflection of curiosity, discipline and purpose. It reminds us that learning is not defined by age, and that a meaningful life can continue to evolve, even after a century.
Stories of everyday Australians, moments of pride, and the values that continue to shape our nation.
