SECRET #16
The earlier you accept help, the longer you stay independent
There is a common pattern in how people approach support at Home.
They wait.
They wait until something becomes difficult.
Then harder.
Then urgent.
But the evidence, and our experience, shows something much more practical. The earlier support is introduced, the longer independence is maintained.
It might just be simple things like, help with cleaning; assistance with transport, support with meal preparation or occasional personal care.
These are small interventions. But they remove pressure from daily life.
When support such as the government’s HCIP programme or Level 1 Support at Home is introduced early your routines stay intact; your energy is preserved, and your confidence remains higher.
The fix
Identify one task that is becoming harder than it used to be. Then get help with just that one thing.
Before qualifying for government funded services, you must register with My Aged Care for an assessment. This will evaluate your needs and eligibility. And it’ll also determine whether you require immediate or basic assistance, prior to full approval.
The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) provides short-term services like cleaning, meals, and transport.
A simple way to approach it is, instead of asking, “Do I need help yet?”, ask, “What would make life easier right now?”
That shift changes everything.
