Secrets to Living Well Part 2 Secret 13 - My Guardian

SECRET #13

Mental decline is NOT inevitable

Mental sharpness depends on regular challenges.

The real secret here is, when you stay constantly in your comfort zone, it does very little for your brain health.

Brains stay stronger when they are asked to work, learning new skills, solving unfamiliar problems and adapting to new information.

It operates on a “use-it-or-lose-it” principle. Under-stimulation leads to cognitive decline, whereas engaging in complex, new activities triggers neuroplasticity – the building of new neural connections.

The fix

Try doing one unfamiliar mental activity this week. Helpful daily challenges include:

  • puzzles
  • reading outside your usual interests
  • memory games
  • learning technology tasks

Novelty matters. Doing something new forces fresh neural activity.

The brain responds well to challenge at every age.

Mental activity is like physical activity – keep using it regularly, and it stays stronger longer.
